Chapter Thirteen
By the time that Ethel and Arturo made their way from the kitchen and back into the dining car, lunch had well and truly wrapped up. The plates and glasses were being cleared, the tables were being wiped down and the passengers were back in their cabins, as if readying themselves to be questioned... well, almost. The three children of Bruce and Sharon were still lingering. They stood on the tables, jumping between them as brats tend to do. When Ethel saw them, she groaned inwardly and prepared herself to tell them to get going. But at the sight of Ethel and Arturo entering the car, the three children stopped what they were doing, turned, and fled from the room.
âPerfect!â Ethel clapped her hands as she made her way toward the first-class cars. âObviously itâs not much, but itâs nice when things work out for you.â
âMaybe weâll get two for two and the killer will just confess?â Arturo joked.
âKillers,â Ethel reminded him. âAnd maybe.â She shot a cheeky smirk back over her shoulder at Arturo. She wasnât expecting anyone to confess, but that wasnât the point of this next part of the investigation. Not by a long shot.
Up until now, Ethel and Arturo had been bouncing around the train like a couple of pinballs, seemingly with little rhyme or reason. And although this wasnât one hundred percent the case, it did feel that way sometimes. The case itself was just so bizarre that the two hadn't had time yet to settle on a single theory or piece of evidence. From the butcherâs knife to the key to the man in the trench coat to the missing package, each new piece of evidence seemed to contradict their previous theory, or shoot it off in a different direction entirely. It was all rather confusing.
Consequently, they hadnât really had time to nail down a solid motive for the killings yet. And without any idea as to a motive, there was no real need to start interrogations. That had all changed now, of course. The motive was the package, although they still didnât know what the package was. Something expensive. Something valuable. Something worth killing for. Someone in first-class had killed Clements and now had this package with them. All Ethel and Arturo had to do was figure out who it was. When they did... well, Ethel had no idea!
Ethel came to a sudden stop. It was just as they had entered the hallway in the first-class cabin and Arturo, who was coming from behind, walked right into her. âWhoa!â he stumbled as he tried his best to not knock Ethel to the ground. âWhatâs wrong?â
âWhat are we doing?â Ethel asked.
âWhat do you mean? This is your plan.â Arturo frowned.
âPlan? What plan?â Ethel held her hands up as if in defeat. âTo just start asking questions like weâre not searching for a cold-blooded killer? Like weâre not walking into the lionâs den? Like we might not be putting our own lives in ââ
âEthel, this was your idea.
